What to do in the Garden in October

Cyclamen

Just because it’s autumn there is no reason to turn your back on your garden, in fact, there is plenty to do throughout October, read on to find out what.

1. Mow your lawn

Mowing your lawn too short may seem like a time saver, but this can damage your grass as well as allow weeds to set root. Keeping your lawn a bit taller results in healthier grass. The general rule of thumb is: Never cut off more than a third of the grass blade. Keep your blade sharp though as a blunt blade will tear the grass.

2. Winter containers

For that burst of colour over the winter and Christmas refresh your summer containers with winter Heather, Pansies, Cyclamen, Hellebore, Mahonia, Snowdrops, Ivy and other evergreens.

Perennial options offer a lot of interest from fabulous foliage colours to attention-grabbing textures these can include silver or deep red foliage. For a splash of red berries Wintergreen is a naturally festive-looking addition, neat, low-spreading it even has reddish-tinged leaves in winter.

3. Move plants indoors

Depending where you are, you will need to bring tender plants into a greenhouse or conservatory. These include tender herbs, Chilli plants, Pelargoniums, citrus fruits, olive trees, and any tender exotics.

4. Harvest fruit

Fruit should be harvested in stages from the summer onwards. You can tell when the fruit is ready by gently squeezing it before picking.

  • Late summer – Early-ripening apple cultivars, blackberries, damsons, figs, grapes, plums and raspberries.
  • Autumn – Apples, goji berries, medlar, pears and quince, autumn-fruiting raspberries.

5. Collect seeds

Increase your plant coverage for free! Through collecting any seeds from trees, shrubs, perennials, aquatic plants, alpines, annuals, biennials, bulbous plants, ornamental grasses vegetables and herbs you can increase your plant coverage. Seeds are typically ready for picking two months after the plant has finished flowering.

6. Trim hedges and lay turf

We recommend all hedges and grass are trimmed prior to the winter. Hedges need to be cut back in autunm and any turf should be laid in autumn or early winter.
