What to do in the garden in June

Finally! The sun is out and we can enjoy our gardens.

A bit of sun and a bit of rain is the recipe for a flourishing garden. And luckily that’s just what we’ve had. There is lots to look forward to now including the longest day (Monday 21st of June) as well as Father’s Day (20th June). June is the optimum time to plant out bedding plants which are part of a quintessentially English summer. The extra light and warmth also means dreaded weeds will sprout up. Keep on top of them by removing them regularly.

  • Deadheading Plants

Dead head both annual and perennial plants. The removal of any flowers that have finished prolongs the flowering season and will keep plants flowering for as long as possible.

  • Watering

Water your plants early morning or when the sun has gone in at night to avoid scorching the leaves. All plants will need checking daily to ensure the soil is kept moist.

  • Container Displays

Give container displays and hanging baskets a liquid feed every few weeks to encourage flowering. Check baskets and containers every day to avoid drying out in the sun. Ensure that they remain moist, but not soggy, as over-watering can lead to plant dying.

  • Bolting

Bolting is the term applied to vegetable crops when they prematurely run to seed. Bolting occurs when the weather heats up and is the plant’s natural attempt to produce seeds so it can reproduce. Crops inclined to bolt include lettuce, basil, leeks, carrots, cabbage, turnip, arugula, beetroot, brassicas, spinach, celery, and onion.

To prevent bolting, pick the outer leaves off, keeping the plant from maturing. This can extend the time the plant produces by as much as 10 weeks, giving you more of a chance to grow it better.

  • Tomatoes

Pinching out side-shoots on tomatoes encourages branching on the plants to produce more fruit. By cutting off part of the main stem, you encourage the plant to grow two new stems from the leaf nodes below the pinch. Simply use your fingernails to ‘pinch out’ the new growth at the end of the stem.

  • Plant Out your Tenders

June is the perfect time to plant up cucumbers, courgettes, and peppers as there is a significantly reduced risk of wind and frost. The heat and water will provide the perfect conditions for your plants to flourish.

  • Bulbs and Tubers

Lift and store spring bulbs for next year, and divide any clumps that are to stay where they are.
