What to do in the garden in January

What to do in the garden in January

It may be January and you could be wondering what, if anything, you could be doing to get your garden ready for the spring.

As January is a time for fresh starts and new goals, you can be getting ready for the following 12-months and thinking about what you want to achieve – after all that’s half the fun!

  • Tidy and trim bushes and trees to ensure they are ready to bloom in the spring

Cut back and prune side shoots to 2 or 3 buds on bushes and shrubs. Your plants are still dormant so January is the perfect time to prune and remove any dead branches.

  • Cut hedges

Cut back hedges as it’s easier to see what you’re doing when the branches have no leaves. Stakes should be put in place in the hedge to avoid damage to the roots. You can move established deciduous trees and shrubs, provided the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. If there is snow in your area, then you may need to brush any snow off the branches.

  • Get raised beds built and ready for the spring

Does your garden need a raised bed or two? January is the time to start planning and get them built ready for spring colour.

  • Servicing equipment

Service any equipment you may have now (mowers, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers etc.) and beat the rush.

  • Clean pots and other outside equipment

Spend time cleaning pots, tools, water butts, greenhouses etc. in preparation for spring.

  • Remove leaves

Collect any dead leaves and use as mulch. Use a leaf blower or your hands to collect leaves and place on the garden or in the compost bin.

  • Fencing

Do you have any fallen fences or perimeter that are unstable or have been damaged in bad weather? Get everything ship-shape and fixed so your garden is secure.

  • Order seeds and plants

Grab a cuppa and your favourite seeds catalogue and start planning. You can order seeds and plants now ready to get started as soon as it’s warm enough.
