Potting Compost Types and Tips

Potting Compost Types & Tips | The Coastal Garden Company | Torbay

Potting compost, also known as potting soil or growing medium, is a crucial element for container gardening and starting growing.

It provides the necessary nutrients, aeration, and drainage for plants grown in pots. Different plants have varying requirements, so choosing the right potting compost is essential.

Here are some common types of potting compost and tips to get the best from it:

Common Potting Compost Types:

1. All-Purpose / Multi-Purpose Compost – Suitable for a wide range of plants, including flowers, vegetables, and herbs. Multi-purpose compost is the best choice if you’re planting small patio pots, hanging baskets, herbs, leafy salads and flowering bedding plants.Usually contains a mix of peat moss, perlite or vermiculite, and organic matter.

2. Cactus Mix – Designed for succulents and cacti that prefer well-draining soil. Typically includes sand or perlite to enhance drainage.

3. Orchid Mix – Specifically formulated for epiphytic orchids. Contains materials like bark, sphagnum moss, and perlite to provide aeration.

4. Seed Starting Mix – Light and fine texture, suitable for germinating seeds. Usually sterile to prevent diseases. You can also use seed compost to repot seedlings and young plants, however it doesn’t have enough nutrients to support larger plants.

5.  Potting Compost – There are two main types – soil-based and soilless. Soil-based composts are designed to mimic loamy garden soil. These are called John Innes. Many people think John Innes is a brand, but it’s actually a recipe from a gardener by the name of John Innes and can bee used for sewing seeds, potting on and repotting.

6. African Violet Mix – Created for African violets and other gesneriads.  Contains a mix of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite for moisture retention.

7. Bonsai Mix – Designed for the specific needs of bonsai trees. Often includes sand, perlite, and organic matter for proper drainage and nutrition.

2. Ensure Good Drainage – Adequate drainage is crucial for preventing waterlogged roots. Add perlite, sand, or vermiculite to improve drainage in heavy soils.

3. Moisture Retention – Some plants require more moisture retention. Adjust the compost mix accordingly. Use materials like peat moss for improved water retention.

4. Sterilise if Necessary – Sterilise potting mix, especially if you’re starting seeds, to eliminate pathogens. You can use an oven or microwave for small quantities.

5. Fertilizer Considerations – Many potting mixes have added fertilisers, but they may not be sufficient for all plants. Monitor plant growth and supplement with fertilisers if needed.

6. Repotting – Repot plants as they outgrow their containers or when the soil becomes depleted. Refresh the potting mix to provide the essential nutrients your plants need to thrive.

7. Watering Practices – Watering needs vary among plants. Understand the moisture requirements of your specific plants. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain away.

8. Storage – Store unused potting compost in a cool, dry place to prevent the growth of unwanted organisms. Remember to read the specific requirements of your plants and adjust your potting mix and care accordingly.
