Gardening Tips for Late Winter

Gardening Tips for Late Winter

With the cooler months upon us you may feel the familiar feeling of adversity creeping in. However, there is plenty we can do in the garden until that glorious spring season returns.

As days get longer and soil temperatures begin to rise, it’s time to prepare for the growing season ahead. If you’re starting out with a new garden or allotment, time spent planning and designing will pay dividends later when it comes to laying out and planting.

This blog has our top tips to do during February and March when there might be some frost around.

  1. Fix Wobbly Fences

Do you have any fallen fences or perimeter that are unstable or have been damaged in bad weather? Get everything ship-shape and fixed so your garden is secure. .

  2. Snow day

If the snow and ice arrives make sure to gently brush heavy snow from trees and shrubs and allow ice to melt naturally.

  3. Polish and clean your tools

Service any equipment you may have now (mowers, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, spades etc.) and beat the rush.

  4. Plant spring bulbs

Get ready for warmer weather and plant bulbs so you have a flurrish of colour from late spring to summer. Start planting summer bulbs in pots indoors, including liatris, begonias, gloxinias, lilies, eucomis and agapanthus.

  5. Prune shrubs, hedges and bushes

Cut back hedges as it’s easier to see what you’re doing when the branches have no leaves. Stakes should be put in place in the hedge to avoid damage to the roots. Cut back and prune side shoots to 2 or 3 buds on bushes and shrubs. Your plants are still dormant so January/February is the perfect time to prune and remove any dead branches.

  6. Keep a plant journal

A lovely old-fashioned way of keeping tabs on what you have planted, when, the weather and much more!

  7. Check your seeds

Germination deteriorates over time so the inclement weather offers a great opportunity to go through all your seeds and decide what to keep, when to plant them and where to plant.

  8. Think of the birds and wildlife

Remember the Wildlife Install a nest box with a camera, so you can watch birds raising their broods in spring and a bug hotel so the insects are not left out.

  9. Order your seeds

Pick your favourites ready to have a superb reward of stunning colour and delicious veg. Grab a cuppa and your favourite seeds catalogue and start planning. You can order seeds and plants now ready to get started as soon as it’s warm enough.

  10. Harvest root veg

It’s the perfect time of year to tuck into warming soups, hot pots and stews packed with seasonal veg that you’ve grown. Think Brussels sprouts, leeks and parsnips; yum!

  11. Prepare your beds

Improve the soil by spreading garden compost or well-rotted manure over beds and forking it.
