Can You Lay Turf in Autumn?

Autumn is the best time of the year to complete any lawn projects, including the installation of turf. Due to the cooler temperatures and more rain experienced in the autumn, there is less risk of your new turf overheating or drying out.

Laying turf is a quick way to get an instant lawn. It’s great for situations where you can’t stay off the lawn for long as you can use a new turfed lawn a few weeks after it has been laid.

Turf roots can take up to 6 weeks to develop a strong root system. It takes around 2 weeks for the shallow root system to form. This means that you need to stay off the grass during this time to give it enough time to form its root system. You will need to give the turf at least 6 weeks to grow before the first frost. Once the ground is frozen, the grass will not be able to continue developing its root system. It will become dormant.

Autumn is the perfect time to lay turf in the UK because of the soil's soft texture, the balance of sun and rain, and the amount of rainfall:

    • Soil

The soil is warm enough to encourage root growth, and it's easy to work with.

    • Rain

There's usually enough rain to keep the turf moist, so you don't need to water it as often.

    • Sun and rain balance

The balance of sun and rain in autumn is ideal for turf growth.

    • Mowing

You don't need to mow as much in autumn and spring, so you can leave the turf undisturbed for a few weeks while it roots in.

TOP TIP:

You can lay turf any time of year however, autumn is generally regarded as the best time as there's a good balance of heat and rain. Laying turf in autumn gives your new lawn six months to settle in and grow before the next summer.

Looking after newly laid turf

In dry weather, you may need to water regularly to keep the new turf constantly moist and ensure it roots in well. During dry periods in mid-to late summer, water every five to ten days. At other times, water during dry periods every fortnight.

Ensure enough water is added to soak down through the turf. Only wetting the upper layer of new turf can lead to shallow rooting and encourage coarser weed grasses.

Mow with the blades set high once the turf has rooted well, usually about three weeks after laying. Tug on the grass to check, it doesn't lift easily - it’s ready.

7 Tips For Mowing A Newly Laid Garden Lawn

    1. When to mow
Your new lawn will probably need its first cut about 3-4 weeks after the turf has been laid. To test if it's ready, tug on the grass to see if the turf lifts. If it does lift, wait and try again in a few days. If you end up with a handful of grass clippings, then it's the right time to bring out the mower.

    2. Mowing height
Set the mower blades high and start mowing weekly, working your way down. For the first few cuts, keep the mowing height on the higher side.

    3. Mowing direction
Try to change the direction you mow in while the turf is establishing.

    4. Mowing frequency
As the season progresses, you can cut your lawn more frequently, reducing the height slightly each time.

    5. Mower blades
Make sure your mower blades are sharp. If the top of the leaf is shredded after mowing, you may need to sharpen the blades.

    6. Watering
In dry weather, water regularly to keep the turf moist and help it root well.

    7. Grass height guide
If you're uncomfortable judging grass height by sight, you can use a 10p or 2p coin as a guide.

You can lay turf any time of year however, autumn is generally regarded as the best time as there's a good balance of heat and rain. Laying turf in autumn gives your new lawn six months to settle in and grow before the next summer.

Here are my tips for taking care of your lawn this autumn:

    • Fertilise
Apply a high-quality autumn or winter fertiliser to strengthen your lawn for winter.

    • Aerate
Aerate your lawn in autumn or spring when the soil is moist. Avoid aerating when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

    • Scarify
Deep rake your lawn to remove dead matter and improve air circulation. This can help prevent moss growth.

    • Treat moss and weeds
Apply lawn treatments to kill moss and weeds.

    • Sweep leaves
Sweep up fallen leaves at least every other day. If left on the lawn, leaves can rot and release pathogens that can cause disease.

    • Trim trees and hedges
Trim trees and hedges to reduce shade.

    • Use a spreader
Use a spreader to ensure you apply the correct amount of fertilizer per square meter of lawn. Applying too much in one area can damage your lawn.

    • Use a seaweed treatment
Apply a seaweed lawn treatment to green up your grass and prepare it for winter.

Lawn Turf FAQs

Is laying turf problem-free?
Laying turf is generally problem-free, as long as the soil is prepared well and the turf is kept watered until it has rooted into the underlying soil.

Will new turf grow in the shade?
If you have tricky growing conditions, such as a shady spot, buy turf that’s a specific mix of grass species suited to those conditions, otherwise, the turf will struggle to get established and will be hard to keep in good condition.
