New planters for Rockfish

New planters for Rockfish

We were absolutely thrilled to be approached by Rockfish in Dartmouth to update their outside area with plants so it looked more attractive than the bins that were there previously. Planters with a mix of plants are fun to create and offer almost unlimited possibilities of combinations.

A pair of matching containers on either side of the front walk serves as a welcoming decoration, adds an abundance of color and ambiance to outdoor areas.

We started by making the planters and putting a layer of gravel in the bottom to reduce the amount of soil required.

For seeds;

sow about 2cm deep in rows in the spring and then thin the plants out to about 30cm between the plants. You can re-plant the thinning’s into another planter or pot as they do transplant easily. Don’t sow too many at one time but instead try and keep sowing a few each week throughout the summer for long-lasting colour.

For plants; make a good hole, carefully remove the plants from their pots, and work more compost around the rootballs. Ensure that the top of the rootball is level with the surface of the compost. Firm the compost around the plants, water well to settle any air pockets and top up with compost if necessary. Make sure there is a gap of about 2.5cm (1in) between soil level and the top of the container. This will ensure there’s room for the water to soak in.

You can plant anything you like in your planters; veg, herbs, flowers, shrubs – it really is up to you!

It’s easier to grow plants in large planters than smaller ones as large containers hold more soil, which stays moist longer and resists rapid temperature fluctuations. As containers are heavy once they’re filled with soil, decide where they will be located

and move them into position before filling and planting. If keeping them watered during the day is a problem, look for sites that receive morning sun but get shaded during the hottest part of the day, even if you’re growing plants for full sun. Afternoon shade will reduce the amount of moisture plants need.

The easiest way to dress up decorative planters is through paint. From matte to gloss or chalky finish, paint has come a long way in providing homeowners with the ultimate choice in finish and colour.
