6 Steps to the perfect lawn

Lawns & Lawn Maintenance in Torbay & The South Hams

Give your garden a makeover and make your lawn lush again.

Do you dream of a strong, green lawn? You’re not alone! A lot of the customers we work with start out with a ‘challenging’ lawn area, however by the time we’ve finished they are delighted and relieved. We can help you create the perfect lawn too…

1. Prep the ground

Good preparation is the key to establishing a successful lawn. We pay particular attention to clearing weeds and cultivating the surface to a fine tilth. We use quality top soil to ensure the ground is well-prepared with ‘feed and weed’ to remove any moss and weeds.

2. Get mowing

With sharp blades, make sure the mower is set to the highest setting and gradually lower for a good, healthy cut. During the spring you should only need to mow your lawn once a week.

3. Remove any moss

Use a scarifier or an aerator to manually remove any moss to give your lawn a luscious look.

4. Beat the gaps

Notice any gaps in your lawn? These can be fixed by gently loosening the soil and sowing new grass seed over the top. Rake in and protect from birds by adding some netting held down firmly.

5. Edging

Create straight edges in your garden with some long shears and a piece of wood. Simply use the wood to create the edges you want and follow the line.

6. Relax

At the end of a long day what’s better than kicking back with a cold drink and enjoying the fruits of your labour?

Need a new lawn?

Turfing creates an instant garden that can be used sooner than seed. This is good for people with children or pets as you can be back on the lawn within a couple of days of laying. It is best laid early spring to take full advantage of the warmer soil and longer days. However, turf can be laid any time between mid-autumn and late winter – whenever the soil is not too wet or frosty. In spring and autumn little mowing is needed so newly-laid turf can be left relatively undisturbed for several weeks.

Turfing is an area that The Coastal Garden Company specialises in, and we take great care in ground preparation to ensure a perfect finish for your garden. It also eliminates any infestations such as Leatherjackets. The process undertaken by turfing a lawn removes any infestations or pests and the need for it to be treated with chemicals.
